Know Your Media

In my Handmade Results Weekly course, I share a business model called the R.E.S.U.L.T.S. model. The first part of the model is the "R".

R is for Research: Conduct smart, strategic market research and choose a potentially profitable target market

Ok, we all can agree that research is valuable.   But where do we start?

I think you start here:

You gotta know your media.

What's your media?   Media is another word for where or through what means you're selling. This is an important concept to really get a handle on because you need to approach one type of selling media very differently from another because people use the media in question for very different reasons.

In our case, we're talking about the internet, so our media is the world wide web.

This is important because you need to understand who's online and why.

Why Do People use the Internet?

Although there are a variety of reasons, by and large INFORMATION is still the main reason people get on the internet and start looking around.   It's a good idea to keep this in mind because they aren't looking to buy something for the most part.

If we know this to be true, that most people are on the internet to look for information, then we need to find a way to figure out who the "buyers" are, how to target them, and how to figure out exactly what they'll buy.   This will be a small percentage of the people browsing the net.

So how and why do people buy stuff on the Internet?

People buy stuff generally for 2 main reasons

1)To solve a problem
2)To satisfy a desire

Makes sense, right?

"Problem" or "Desire" are the reasons you have to be looking at when you are thinking , "How do I sell people jewelry?"

This is the approach you need to take to do useful online research into what you can sell successfully.

Where to Start Your Handmade Jewelry Market Research

What problems do people have that can be solved by jewelry?

What desires are strong enough to cause someone to buy jewelry on the internet of all places?

To me this is where the research should start.

  • What are people searching for?
  • What types of behavior do they engage in online?
  • When they do shop, how do they go about it?
  • How do they choose who to buy from?

Lots of questions!

Look around this site for ideas on how to answer them :)
