Reduce Image Size for the Web

The problem with photo rich sites, is that they are painfully slow to load even with hi-speed internet.

When you take a photo, typically your image size is pretty massive.   Usually hovering around 1 MB or larger.   Definitely not what you want to put on a website.

You'll want to keep your images at a reasonable size so that your website loads quickly - 20 kb-40 kb per photo is a good rule of thumb.

Two programs will help you do this.

The first - Photoshop - is a pricy option, but does a great job.   It's what I tend to use most of the time.

You'll want to use a function called "save for web".

Here's How to Save For Web in Photoshop

Using Irfanview to Make Your Images Smaller

The second option to reduce your image size is a free program called Irfanview.

The following video shows you how you use Irfanview to optimize your images for the web.

Now go and check out your own site.   How big are your image files?   If they are bigger than 40 kb, use one of the above methods to make them smaller.

Best,
