When I first picked up Jewelry Selling Secrets I was a little skeptical. I guess I'm a little gun-shy and the marketing looked a little too slick. How intimidating!

But as I started to go through the material, I started to really enjoy it and there is some really useful stuff in here.

It was a really easy read and talked about a number of things that I ve never seen spoken of anywhere else in the jewelry selling niche.

What I really liked was that Kameron is a business woman and thinks about things from a selling perspective.

My favorite part was here detailed information on how she marketed to the stars. Sure, it cost her up front, but if you can get celebrities photographed with your jewelry and you can get some press, wouldn t that totally be worth it?

I'd always wondered before how people did that.

So that was the book. It had enough good content to be worth the $47 cost for a serious jewelry maker who wants to do more than dabble on Etsy.

It was great advice for the average jewelry maker who has absolutely no clue how to approach shops, how to create a focused business strategy, and how to get the most bang for their marketing efforts.

I love audio but hate washing dishes.

But then I listened to the audios. I love audio. I listen while I wash dishes. I hate washing dishes.

I expected the audios to be a reading of the book, but instead I listened to a very interesting interview. This interview, between Kameron and an internet marketing guy (sorry, I forget his name), really consolidated everything for me. It even made me want to start calling up boutiques myself!

Kameron really does it make it sound really easy and do-able to make a good income from your jewelry.

Who do I recommend this for? Well, I don t think it s for everyone. If you re a hermit who wants to know how to do away with dealing with people at all then maybe this isn t for you. And if you re looking for online marketing techniques there aren t any of those either.

However, if you re trying to create a viable business then you ll enjoy this book and audio package. It s definitely for someone who is serious and who s willing to invest a little time and energy into the sales side of things.

It s also a really good primer on how business and retail really works and how to make it work for you. Kameron s easy casual attitude in the audio interview takes a lot of the scariness out of it. She gives a good description of how it all works - how stores decide what to sell, how shop owners like to be treated, and how you partner with the store for your mutual benefit. If you help them look good, then they want to help you. After all, shop owners are just people who want to make a profit too so if you help them do that, then you re golden.

The Bonuses

I guess I'm a little contrary. Being a "what-are-other-people-doing-with-their-marketing-type-of-gal, I'll often look at the bonuses first when I test-drive a product.

Kameron throws in a number of bonuses which really helps one swallow the $47 book price so much better, but even the bonuses should be worthwhile, right?

There are 2 bonus supply resource lists.

The first, the Asian sources list is clearly not proprietary content. Resale rights probably picked up for a song or not even (you get resale rights to the 2004 Asian resource list too!) And the œMega suppliers list was good, but not really a list where you can œpay pennies on the dollar for supplies.

So those bonuses weren't that great in my opinion, but there are other bonuses as well.

These bonuses might very well be useful - the jewelry making bonus, and the website building bonus.

There are some videos showing some basic techniques, and there is a video showing how to make a website in an hour. I can t comment on them because I didn t watch them.

Not because they didn t look worthwhile, but because, well, I m a little short on time and I just didn t.

I already know how to make jewelry. And the make a website in an hour, well I know how to do that too. So I just went on to the meat of the thing. If you need instruction on the basic jewelry making or quick website creation, they might well be quite useful to you.

Conclusion

Kameron Kay s Jewelry Selling Secrets is a good book with advice you re hard pressed to come by in the handmade selling market.

The audio interview was exceptional and a great motivator too. The book was a little on the pricey side, but considering you'll more than make up for the cost if you follow her strategies, it's well worth it.

copyright by Rena Klingenberg

Your blog is an excellent tool for selling your jewelry online. In fact, many jewelry artists sell their work exclusively from their blogs.

You can stir up your readers' interest in your work by blogging about how your jewelry is created, what's unique about a particular piece or component, what the piece signifies to you, what happened while you were creating it, etc.

Basically, give the piece of jewelry a history and an interesting story. Let the tale unfold over a few blog posts.

Stories sell jewelry.

Stories sell jewelry. And stories told in episodes gain more readers with each new episode.

Use your blog to build up anticipation for each new piece of jewelry or new design you're working on. Build suspense and desire “ and then unveil the piece. Launch it with a bit of fanfare. Invite readers to comment.

You can put a discreet œbuy now button right there in your blog, directly beneath the photo of the newly unveiled piece of jewelry. Many artists are able to sell each new piece they make, directly from their blog, with these techniques.

Remember that your jewelry blog visitors don't just want information; they want to be entertained. And the better you entertain them, the more they'll bring other people to your blog “ and to your jewelry.

It's sort of the modern version of being a traveling artist in Medieval days “ you gather an interested crowd by spinning stories and entertaining your audience as you make jewelry.

When the jewelry is finished and its story has been told, there's always a well-entertained customer eager to buy it. And the rest of the crowd spreads the word to tell their friends and family about the entertaining jewelry artist.

Repeat this process indefinitely. And once you really develop a following and people see how fast your new stuff disappears, your new pieces will go even faster.

People will pay for things they love, regardless of the price. Your job is to help them fall in love with it, and feel the urgency to buy it before someone else does.

Occasionally post blog entries to tell stories about other things that your audience would laugh about or care deeply about. But make it into a personal conversation with them, putting your own words and heart into it.

This kind of story can be triggered by something you saw in the news, or in another blog or forum. For example, if you're making mothers' bracelets and your market is moms, you might share an emotional story you read about saving childhood memories.

Make your readers laugh, make them cry, make them feel.

Emotions are powerful, and if you can make your audience feel something, they'll come back for more “ and share it with their friends.

Quick Review:

Usefulness of content: Very useful.

Writing Style: Warm and casual. Doesn t use a lot of jargon.

Ease of Implementation: 5 stars. These are 5 minute tips. You could probably add a new one to your business each week and reap the benefits without breaking a sweat.

Frustration factor: Easy to understand and exceptionally low on the overwhelm scale. Doesn t beat around the bush, and actually goes out of the way to tell you not to do everything at once.

Topic Scope: Not an A-Z reference. Best for those looking to improve their business rather than learn how to start one.

Bottom Line: A perfect blend of easy to do and results-oriented, this book should please anyone running their own jewelry business. I think it s well worth the $34.95 ticket price. If you follow through on even one or two of these techniques, you re sure to make your money back tenfold.

Detailed Review:

I ve gotten to know Dr. Dave's warm and casual style over the years through his earlier books so I expected to like this book too. If you ve never read David Weiman s books before, you ll find it s like talking to a knowledgeable friend that only has the best in mind for you.

101 More Great Jewelry Selling Techniques is laid out in an easy to reference kind of way. There are 5 sections: the Introduction, Selling Face to Face, Selling on the Web, Advertising and Promotion, and Customer Service. Let s look at each of these in turn.

The Introduction

Before I get into the introduction, I just have to share a secret. I m easily overwhelmed. The smart part of my brain gets easily tired. The not-so-smart part of my brain loves to be told exactly what s coming up, what to expect, and what widget to crank so I don t have to over-exert myself.

So I breathed a real sigh of relief as I read the introduction in 101 More Great Jewelry Selling Techniques. I bet you ll find the intro refreshing too. It lets you know right off the bat that you don t have to implement all 101 techniques into your business at once (I know, that might be obvious, but I like a little extra reassurance and hand-holding from my marketing manuals).

Selling Face to Face

If you re an introvert like me, you ll read this section with pleasure. You get 28 easy to use, concrete ways to behave face to face. These are the simple things that I imagine come naturally to a more gregarious person. Things like how to make eye contact casually and how fast to talk. How to hold your body and how you can behave to seem friendlier, more open, and more inclusive.

My favorite tip was about how to write an œelevator pitch . An elevator pitch is a well-thought out one or two sentence summary of who you are and what you do. It never occurred to me before, but what a great idea! Once you ve rehearsed your elevator speech, you ll never be caught off guard again when put on the spot to describe what you do.
(Note to self “ write one of these before my next awkward social event!).

Selling on the Web

You ve noticed how much more comfortable people have gotten buying artisan jewelry online, haven t you? For the first time ever in history, the average artisan working from home can sell to people halfway around the world.

The challenge now is to learn how to take advantage of the opportunity. No mean feat with the speed things are changing! This will get you thinking about what types of things you need to be doing online. You ll learn how to warm up your website, how to use social networking, and how to use email marketing campaigns and low-cost press releases to get the word out about you and your website.

Advertising and Promotion

101 More Great Jewelry Selling Techniques' Advertising and Promotion section has something for every kind of jewelry business. You get 47 tips in total here.

You ll learn tips for using testimonials, how to write well, and what types of freebies to offer to œsweeten the pot . There s also advice on phone lines, how to offer custom services, and even how to partner with your local dry cleaner!

Customer Service

You get some real gems here as well. Great ideas on how to handle returns, how to listen to your customers, and how to get referral business.

Conclusion

Great businesses don t appear from nowhere overnight. They re built by gradually making small improvements in each area over time. You ll definitely get some new and easy to implement ideas here.

Social Networking - Selling Jewelry Online the New Way

You probably already know Rena Klingenberg if you've been researching jewelry business information for awhile. She is probably the top internet expert on jewelry businesses, ans she's really nice besides. A stay-at-home Mom like myself, she earns her living on the internet much the same way I do.

Her E-book, Social Networking - Selling Jewelry Online the New Way, is a wonderful complement to the Handmade Results Lessons and will teach you further about marketing without selling.

Rena shares great tips and suggestions for increasing your customer base using forums, blogging, etsy, squidoo, and more. A must have for anyone even considering selling their jewelry on the internet.

If you already sell jewelry on the internet, you KNOW "build it and they will come" is a load of crap. I bought this book as soon as Rena released it (on March 27, 2008). Even though the world of social networking changes almost daily in terms of the tools available and what's "hot" today, the principles in Rena's book are the same. Relationships are key. I haven't seen anything like it out there on the internet, in bookstores, or anywhere else.

Already Know you Want it? $39 USD

Full disclaimer: Should you purchase this e-book, I will receive a commission for referring you to it. I only endorse products I believe in and use or have tried myself. (You wouldn't believe how many really crappy products there are out there that I don't recommend.) I didn't receive a free review copy of this book; I actually did spend $39 of my own hard-earned money and I was happy to do so because it was so worth it.

The Basics of Marketing: How Do You Know if You're Clueless?

I typically never go to networking type meetings, but I was at a women's business networking group a few weeks ago with a friend who is much more of a joiner than I am, and I was surprised that about 5 out of the 20 or so women had bead and handmade jewelry related businesses.

I made a discovery at that meeting. It was hard for me to believe at first, but many of the women in the group were basically clueless about basic marketing concepts, and especially internet marketing basics.

Having little experience with offline networking, I imagined that people who were savvy enough to want to network would at least know some marketing basics.

Are You Clueless Too?

So here's the point. I don't want to be harsh, but maybe you are in that clueless category and don't even know it. Sometimes you don't know what you don't know until someone enlightens you.

I must admit that a few short years ago I was in that clueless category too. As artists and craftspeople, sometimes we just want to make things in our studio and not really interact with the world in any way. At least I feel that way. I started learning about marketing because it's necessary, not because I love selling or advertising, or even because I find it at all interesting on its own.

I probably have the dream of all artistic, introverted people. If I could create all day and have an enthusiastic salesperson/girl or boy friday do everything else I'd be as happy as a clam.

Of course the plain truth is the world doesn't work that way. You can be the most brilliant craftsperson in the world and make the most beautiful things that the world has ever seen but it wouldn't matter. The marketers make the money. That's just the way it is.

The first step, as they say, is acknowledging you have a problem.

Are you clueless?

Here's the test. If you read these questions and don't know how to answer them, well, you know....

Who am I targeting (or who is my audience or ideal customer?)

What do they need?

What is the problem I am solving for them?

What are features and benefits? What are mine?

Do I have a marketing strategy?

What is my marketing strategy?

Do I have goals? What are they? Are they specific and measurable?

How can I get people excited about my product?

How is my product different from others?

How is my marketing different from others?

Researching:

How do I find out what people want and need?

How do I find out whether people will pay for what they want?

Who is the competition?

How well is the competition doing?

How am I different from the competition?

Basic Internet Marketing:

What is search engine marketing?

What is web traffic?

What are the best ways to get web traffic?

What is Google Adwords?

What are keywords?

What is a "list"?

What is search engine optimization?

What are backlinks?

What is an autoresponder?

These are some of the most basic questions there are for anyone with a business. If you are planning on selling your jewelry entirely offline, with no website or web presence whatsoever, maybe you won't need any internet marketing.

I suggest though, that you should at least have an email mailing list so that you can follow up with regular customers.

I don't want to scare you, but if you can't answer most of these questions, you're in the "clueless" category. Don't worry though, there is lots of information out there for the learning. Much of it is free

Action Steps for Today:

Relax.

Let some of the question percolate in your mind for a bit. At least now you know what you don't know.

Write a comment below. Let me know what you're thinking.

P.S. You'll learn all this and more if you become a free Handmade Results member. My mini lessons will quickly bring you up to speed.
