Handmade Results Updates – Where We Are Going

Another quick update, some housekeeping, and some information on where we are going and getting started...

By the way, I'm a little out of breath for this so please don't be annoyed - I just came home from walking my kids to school. It is blow-y (is that a word?) out there today!

Hi, Christine Gierrer here again. It is about 9:30 in the morning on Wednesday, October 7th, and I m just going to quickly touch base with you.

I ve been busy with something the last couple of days.

Since I got this handy dandy voice recorder thing, I had the bright idea that I would take my Wire Work Secrets E-book and make an audio version of it, not realizing exactly how much audio that would be.

So, it turned out to be a few hours and then I had to edit out some sniffles and coughs and some parts where I realized I had typos; and anyways, so it turned into a long production and then I had to upload it and figure out how to get all that stuff worked out.

So, what I thought would be a job of a couple hours basically turned into an all day long into the evening kind of project, you know, in between kids and life and everything else.

More like two or three days actually.

I ve kind of fallen behind on my little schedule I have in my mind of getting this report out to you and some lessons.

I know some of you are really chomping at the bit and are really excited and want to get started.

So I thought I d give you something pretty quick, just to give you something to work on.

If you are already online or are already selling something and it s not working out so well, or if you re just getting started, well here it is in a nutshell. Here s the basic getting started philosophy of mine.

People are asking me about Etsy, and if Etsy s no good then what do I do. And I m not really saying that Etsy is not good, it s just that selling jewelry on Etsy is kind of a difficult proposition because there s a lot of jewelry and jewelry in general is hard to sell online because people like to try it on, wear it.

So what we are going to do is have a strategy.

Our strategy is to find buyers who are interested in something specific.

By that I mean something specific as in we re going to do some market research first.

If you already have a business, this might freak you out a little bit, but I m not going to tell you to restart your whole business “ don t worry about it.

We re going to look into specific themes I guess you d say. Now the people that do best online, I think, are people who fill a need that is already existing.

There are people out there that, for example, that don t go out and start making a whole bunch of like horse jewelry just because I said people like horses because we had to do our research, but there are people for example who like horses and will buy horse jewelry because they like horses, not because they like jewelry. And for example, I have a friend, my friend Eva; she loves the color green and brown. For whatever reason, she only wears green and brown and everyone knows it, and so everyone when they go to buy her a gift will buy something green and brown.

Those are two ideas right there.

What else, so there s people that love certain animals, there s people that love certain hobbies, there are people that love coffee.

Basically I want you to start thinking about different things like that because if you aim, think of it like this, if you throw a big ball of mud at a wall and see what sticks, you re not really targeting anyone, right?

Like you re just hoping something works. But, if you are laser targeted on something and focus on that one thing and you get known for that one thing, and you choose properly and it s something that people want and people will pay for and it s a market with money, money that they will spend, it doesn t have to be a big market.

But if you can be, I don t know, the bug jewelry lady, or if you can be the queen of green, or you can be, so I think you re probably getting the picture.

So, what we will be starting out with is how to do market research. We are going to be doing some keyword research, which is the keywords that people put into the search engines; for example, when they re looking for something. We will be doing some research into what competition there is out there already, because basically the easiest way to go into a market is to find one where people are there and want stuff that are actually online wanting stuff, looking for stuff, but there isn t a lot of competition.

So, I ll just put that little idea out there and I ll keep working on that report and trying to get this website setup, and we ll talk soon.

One last thing - I think I ve configured this website properly so that you can now sign up for the free membership, so you can go ahead and do that.

I have it, you can get with these types of websites, you can get them parsing, that s what it s called, parsing, I m not sure why, parsing into my mailing list setup or whatever.

Everyone who s listening to this pretty much will already be on that mailing list because obviously you ve got the email that said this is up. So, there might be a little bit of weirdness, I m not sure exactly if you get an error message or not, but it should be working.

I tested it last week, but I can t remember now, that probably says that you will have to check your email and activate, but I don t think you ll have to do that because the activation is only to be on the email mailing list, basically because that s one of the rules so that people don t get spam; everyone has to activate or confirm their email address that way.

But since, I know I m beating a dead horse, but since you re already on this list, you probably won t get that email and you probably don t have to activate anything and everything should be fine.

I'm glad I found your website. I left my job to stay home with my disabled husband and brother. I have not been making jewelry very long, but really enjoy it. I really miss having an income and am interested in selling online. I downloaded your special report, "How To Get Results...." I like to read information and also watch video clips. I have some computer knowledge, but need plenty more. I look forward to getting the information I need to be successful. Thanks for your help. Marcia

I like the audios, then having to go thru pages of text! I am a sponge right now and I use to have a shop over on Esty, and I agree with you Esty is not the best place for jewelry artisans . . . way too many choices and one yes, can get lost in the ocean of things. Aww im so excited, cant wait to get started, so fed up of the hours dragging by in the office, dont get me wrong, Im grateful for a job in the current climate, but jewellery is what i love and in my current job i just exist.....

Kathleen -the Purple lady lol, great minds think alike, after reading I was thinking about what I like and Im into my crystals and healing properties, then thought about colours and basically narrowed it down to Rose Quartz, the benefits of it, what group of people could benefit from it and the colour pink etc!!!

I am learning so much from you already! Conducting market research is a must. I have to admit that the items that I find that sell where I am are not to my taste, but as you said, there's no reason to compete when you do not have to!

Interesting and you have helped me to think about heading down a different direction. My partner and I have been getting ready for a Christmas show (our only one for this year) and so we have been building up our inventory. However, after reading (yes, I too, am a reader) my partner and I have a passion for (dare I say it?) .gasp! PURPLE. She's a dark and bright purple lover, I'm a lilac purple person and all our pieces have a signature amethyst on them. So Now I'm thinking, maybe we should just concentrate on what we love and only make a few non-purple pieces and go for the "purple people eaters". It's food for thought at any rate. Also, thanks for the bit about Etsy. We were thinking of it, dragging our feet really and I think that definately for now, we're going to stay well away from it. Thanks again. I am a new seller too, and also thankful that I saw your e mail back along about Etsy before I wasted any time there! Up to now I have only sold to a few friends and family.

I inherited some money from an Aunt a while ago and it was the perfect opportunity to turn my more or less full time pastime into a business. I really need to make this work, out of respect for my Aunt, and my Mum, who allowed me to have the money early ( It was her inheritance really, but she shared with me and my brother so we could enjoy it together) so any help and advice to help to make it work is gratefully received!

I bought your book Wire Working Secrets, and also the dvd, which I haven't watched properly yet because my dvd player on my laptop is on the blink and it kept freezing and I can never get the lounge one to myself for any length of time!

This is really exciting and I'm sure we're going to get lots out of it. I think you're doing great and who cares about a few ums! Its a really good idea and thanks for all your time and input. Can't wait to hear more!

I sell (try to sell) on Etsy. Of course not much happening right now. I was shocked when I read the first newsletter about selling on Etsy. I too have been thinking the very same thing. They pust renewing and listing as advertising. I am just not sure where to go from here if I were to stop trying to sell on Etsy. I have a shop on 1KMarkets and of course not much happening there either. May be I can soon pick up some new avenues. Thanks for all your information.

I know... I think Etsy is great for some things but not for jewelry... I think you'll love the lessons - I'm racking my brain to figure out how to teach you all this stuff without it getting boring

I liked the part where you mentioned that it is not good idea to sell jewelry in Etsy.com. Your opinion was honest, and sincere, and I liked your point of view. The jewelry marketing strategy you give us is unique, and it makes a lot of sense, thanks for sharing.

Just letting you know that the log in problem I had is no longer an issue. I received an e-mail confirmation in my spam box that had the log in name and password that I had originally selected........so, no worries!! Yah whooo!!!

I am having trouble with the log in process. I have already signed up for the lessons, and am on the mailing list, but when I go through the log in process, it runs me through the sign up for the newsletter, which I already recieve.

Sorry for the confusion, but what do I need to do to get started? How do I go about selecting a log in name and password? I know this should be simple, but it's just not working for me and I am not sure why this is.

Sorry I took so long to reply Vickie - I'm still working on this myself. If you're on the mailing list, that's all you need for now. Once I'm sure this website is setup and working the way I want it, I'll make a little video walking you through it. But til then, you're good as you are. As always, I'll let everyone know by email :)

you may want to write down what you are going to say before making audios. I am very interested in what you have to offer and say, but you said "um" so many times before you got to the point that I almost turned you off.

Hey Sue, yes the uhmms are a nervous habit - still not used to talking to the air yet. To be honest I'm not sure writing anything down will help - and I'm sure not going to script everything! This is supposed to be saving time not making more work! I'll try to be more cognizant of the uhms though. After I get more used to it they'll go away I'm sure.
